The collective opinion of both the parish Human Concerns Commission and St. Vincent de Paul Conference with approval of pastoral council is to support those communities who are in greatest need right now and recommend the following prioritized list of organizations:
Catholic Charities Milwaukee Refugee and Immigration Services
Catholic Charities Office of Refugee and Immigration Services is requesting financial donations to assist individuals and families through the immigration process. Immigration services is comprised of attorney-based programs that help local immigrants find their best legal options, including: newcomers to the US who are seeking to become citizens or reunify with family members living in the US; individuals trying to secure asylum or temporary protection in the US; and immigrant victims of domestic violence.
Afghan Refugees
Afghan refugees are arriving to Fort McCoy located in Tomah, WI and volunteer efforts are being coordinated by local Catholic Charities agencies. Food and shelter is being provided by the US military, but there are still ways that people can help. Catholic Charities La Crosse has created Amazon and Target charitable donation lists for items in need, and Catholic Charities for the Dioceses of La Crosse and Green Bay have websites where interested volunteers with legal, social work, counseling, education and immigration/refugee experience are encouraged to volunteer.

The pantry and co-op are requesting cash donations at this time as a $1.00 donation can typically buy 10 lbs. of food. A five-dollar donation is more than enough to help us feed a typical family for more than a week. Checks can be made out directly to St. Hyacinth Food Pantry or to Lumen Christi with St. Hyacinth Food Pantry listed in the memo line. The greatest needs for the Pantry at this time are:
The St Hyacinth's Emergency Food Pantry is one of the largest Hunger Task Force Pantries in Milwaukee County. Typically, the pantry will distribute 30,000 to 50,000 lbs. of food per month to approximately 600+ families averaging in size from 3 to 3.5 family members. Most of the food is obtained from Hunger Task Force and Feeding America, which means items vary depending on their inventory. Many times, basic staples and hygiene supplies are unavailable. The pantry has many Lumen Christi parishioners as volunteers and always wecome more. Contact Kathy Saiia at 262-939-6119 or s67tr4a@aol.com if you are interested in volunteering!
