Lumen Christi! Deo Gratias! Light of Christ! Thanks be to God!
The above text is from the Great Vigil of Easter, at the Lucernarium, the Service of Light. In Sacred Scripture and Roman Liturgy, the image of light is always involved in the removal of darkness. We rejoice as “children of the Light” (I Thessalonians 5:5) because Christ has shattered the darkness of sin and death and we now walk in his light.
Not only is Lumen Christi the name of our parish, it is our mission to live as “Children of the light” as Jesus says;
You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lampstand, where it gives light to all in the house. Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father. (Matthew 5:14-16)
