I am a Mom to two sons: Andrew will be heading off to college this fall; Landon will be a junior and preparing for Confirmation in the spring. My husband Erich and I travel frequently to cheer on both boys who continue to play basketball.
I had volunteered to teach when both boys were in elementary school, paused during middle school, and returned to teach 10th grade this past year. I did not realize how much I had enjoyed interacting with the students, while serving as a listener and guide on their faith journey.
The 10th grade students watched episodes of "The Chosen" during class this past year. The students frequently commented that seeing Jesus and the apostles represented this way helped their deeper understanding of Bible stories and even readings during Mass. To witness the students' enjoyment and connection to something faith-based was inspiring. When they had that quiet time set aside at the end of the week without phones, I was surprised how much they had to share and what amazing listeners they are when given the time and space of the small group format.
How has serving in youth ministry impacted you and your faith? The quiet time set aside to prep for class and prayer was something I looked forward to, and I have continued to learn and grow along with the students. Class time was a peaceful and motivating start to the week ahead.
What would you tell someone who doesn't feel qualified to serve in youth ministry? I initially felt like I was too busy with "other stuff" and didn't have room in my schedule. Olivia does an amazing job of providing class materials and resources that make prep work reasonable and actually enjoyable. Classes are typically held two Sunday evenings per month - even busy people can make that work!
We want to grow our team of amazing volunteers in every area of Catholic Formation: Child, Youth, and Adult. There's a role for everyone! Ask the Holy Spirit if He might be inviting you to share your gifts, and receive even more in return. Get in touch with any of our CF staff to start a conversation!
