As we read today’s gospel, it is easy to feel kinship with Peter, John, and James as they fell asleep. It reminds us of how we are not always alert to the special spiritual and everyday moments in life.
After hearing the voice saying “This is my chosen Son; listen to him,” we can well imagine being struck speechless. What were they to make of this experience? Personally, I find the apostles being silent a very understandable instinct. They may well have wondered what people would make of their experience.
Stopping to think, in moments that strike us as totally out of our realm of understanding or experience, allows us to sort out the meaning. It enables God to help us to understand. Then, just maybe, we will be ready to go exploring daringly in how to follow Him.
